Binocular Vision Dysfunction Test
The 5 Minute, 5 Step Guide to Potentially Change Your Life
This guide is an attempt to reveal if any of these symptoms: headaches, dizziness, migraines, eye pain, eye strain, stiff neck, shoulder pain, upper back pain, post-concussive syndrome, agoraphobia, anxiety in large crowds or large buildings, or even panic attacks when driving; may in part be stemming from binocular vision dysfunction (eye misalignment).
Most tests during a typical eye exam are not sensitive enough to uncover such small eye misalignments such as vertical heterophoria, that can be causing your symptoms. You may have even seen ophthalmologists and optometrists that have told you, “your eyes are fine.”
Step 1: While reading or looking at text on a computer screen, tip your head to the right and then to the left. Which side feels more comfortable with your vision/eyes? Write it down.
Step 2: Scale your current dizziness/headaches and/or overall symptoms on a scale of 0 to 10 (10 being the worst).
Step 3: Sit down in a comfortable chair and whichever side your head tilt feels more comfortable, occlude or patch the OPPOSITE side’s eye with your hand for 5 minutes while looking at blank wall about 8 ft. away. (E.g., if it feels comfier to tilt your head to your left, you will cover up the right eye)
Step 4: Once you’ve covered your eye for 5 minutes, before uncovering your eye, scale your symptoms again on a scale of 0 to 10. Do you feel any better?
Step 5: Uncover your eye so you’re seeing with both eyes again. Are your symptoms starting to worsen again now?
If your answered yes to either or both steps 4 or 5, you likely have a binocular vision dysfunction. Dr. Zucker will evaluate your binocular vision system very closely for a vertical heterophoria (hyperphoria), superior oblique palsy, exophoria, esophoria, or a combination.
If we uncover you have any of the above binocular vision dysfunctions, you may be suitable for NeuroLens Treatment. NeuroLens treatment is cutting edge, graduated prism technology that helps to re-align your eyes, to correct your potential binocular vision dysfunction. Or If you only have a vertical misalignment, you may be suitable for custom designed soft contact lenses that correct your vertical heterophoria or superior oblique palsy (fourth cranial nerve palsy).
I gratefully “tip my hat” to Dr. Debby Feinberg, Dr. Eric Weigel, Dr. Raymond Roy and Dr. Jeff Krall for their innovative work in the field of binocular vision.
